Arrow & Apple E-Course: Week 1

WEEK 1 Collage

Last night while reading blogs (A Beautiful Mess and Smile & Wave), I decided that I really wanted to take Arrow & Apple's new lighting e-course (the discount code from Rachel sealed the deal) and that was it. I typed my credit card number into Google checkout and hit the ground running. I've really wanted to improve my photo-taking skills and the price was great.

Today, I rushed to Home Depot to get some of the supplies I needed. Did you know that they make you cut the PVC tubing yourself? I could have lost a finger; I'm super clumsy! It seemed like the old guy really hated me. I should have worn work boots and a sleeveless tee or something. I guess rolled-up khakis and a Ralph Lauren button-down aren't necessarily tough guy clothes, but I digress.

I finally got home about an hour ago and got to work immediately setting up all of my new toys. I'm so excited to get started! Keep an eye on my progress and please don't be afraid to give me feedback!

I still make stuff.

gettin crafty DSC_0418
(Excuse these pictures, I took them at 1am in the bathroom. Haha)

I made these little felt flower boutonnieres and bouquets for my mom's vow renewal today! She asked me to make them, but gave me full creative license to do whatever I thought would look good.

I went to JoAnn's and they had the most awful floral picks and really sad looking ribbon. I decided to find an inspiring fabric, and then just bought a ton of coordinating felt with no plan whatsoever. I used a tutorial I found through a Google image search at Please Note at it worked perfectly!!!! I'm so happy with the results and I'm pretty sure that she was too. That fabric is incredible (I actually bought the whole bolt, just to have it) I know the colors are super unorthodox, but I have pretty quirky taste!

Don't you just love them?

Doing stuff via Instagram!

I been working very hard on an amazing creative project that's eating up all of my spare time! I'm not complaining, it will be absolutely worth it and it's an incredible opportunity, possibly one of the most exciting things that's ever happened to me.

Unfortunately, between that and working a full time day job, that doesn't leave me with a ton of time to play. However, I did take a few spare moments to make a fancy dinner here and there, brew some sun tea and even try out a few new crafting techniques. For someone that rarely wakes up before 11am, that's quite a list of accomplishments, right?

Instead of just posting links to other blogs about stuff that looks cool, I decided that I would use today to share some things from other blogs that I've tested out personally.

Sound good? Here we go...

We all know I'm awful at taking food pictures; add instagram filters to the mix and it's even worse. As gross as my picture makes it look, Veggie Mama's "Cheaty, Easy, Quick Sun Dried Tomato Ravioli" was incredible! It was my first time using wonton wrappers and the process was totally painless. DO NOT skip out on the heavy cream sauce either, I thought we might to save a few calories, but it was so tasty! Definitely worth the minimal effort!

Yesterday, we spent a ton of time working on our little postage stamp sized garden. We planted a bunch of marigolds and other super sweet flowers, and while we were digging holes and planting plants Miss Indie's Autumn Orange Sun Tea sat on the ledge next to us brewing.. I bought decaf tea bags, because I'm still steering clear of that stuff (very few migraines lately!) and I used a few extra cloves because I love them. After getting all sweaty and grimey outside, this was such a refreshing treat!

Kellyn and I haven't had a crafternoon in ages! While wandering the aisles of Michaels the yesterday trying to pick pick our project du jour, I remembered My Paper Crane's Pour-paint pots and we quickly snatched up all of the things that we would need to make these lovelies. Kellyn started out with a very sophisticated stencil but quickly gave up because the poured paint looked so cool! It's so simple and the results seem pretty great. I don't have any FO shots yet because the pots are still drying; so much paint! We bought the cheapest stuff (50 cent acrylic) and used all four bottles plus a little Martha Stewart glitter paint on four pots, so it was pretty budget conscious, especially for us. I can't wait to see them all dried out and ready to go!

Even in my super busy schedule, I'm still finding time to enjoy the process because that's what this crafting thing is all about, right?

Todd Oldham and Kid Made Modern.

I've had a design crush (maybe a not-so-designy one, too) on Todd Oldham for my entire life. Yep. ALWAYS.

In the late 90's (when I was just barely old enough to ride the bus alone), I went to his shop in Soho and basically cried and drooled all over the place. Soho was a dream world; Cynthia Rowley, Anna Sui, and Todd Oldham all in the same place!!! Perfect!

It may have been a little strange for a adolescent boy to be reading Paper Magazine or Flaunt, but even at an early age I had an insatiable appetite for good design. I tended (as I still do) to favor bold colors and mid-century inspired visuals, so it was only natural that I was drawn to Todd's aesthetic He continues to be a major inspiration in all of my work.

I remember special ordering one of his first books at the bookstore and then selling handmade magnets to my neighbors to get together the $45 cover price. It was worth every single penny.

Today, we stopped by Target because I wanted to see if anything was left from his KID MADE MODERN line of craft supplies that was released on the 20th. I was prepared for nothing to be left (in true Target fashion), so I was elated to find a FULL END CAP. OMG, right?

I had the same reaction to tangible Todd-ness that I had had ages ago, as an awkward tween in his brightly colored Soho shop. He just gets it? Y'know? My eyes teared up as I started scooping everything off the shelves into a basket.

After picking up one of everything, the voice of reason (Dave) calmed me down and I only bought a few things. I may be secretly planning to go back without him so I can clear off the shelves. Don't tell!!!!

I'm so glad that I had the opportunity to once again support all that is great.

Thank you Target, and thank you Todd!

Maryland Sheep and Wool: Swag!

MDSW swag
My creation

I didn't really but that much at Maryland Sheep and wool in hindsight. I'm still waiting on a very important check, before I can spend tons on yarn without feeling bad about it.

First and foremost, there was a TON of sock yarn, and while I like knitting socks I have more than enough really good yarn already stashed. I did buy a nice skein of Eidos from The Verdant Gryphon in the Pittaco colorway.

I was hoping to find nice DK/Worsted/Bulky yarns to round out what I had at home. There wasn't much I liked, so after walking the entire fairgrounds, we walked back to the Blue Moon Fiber arts to get the first yarn I saw; Mopsy. Someone I know winces every time I say there's angora in it, but that just makes me love it more :-)

While waiting for Maggie Sansone and Rover Dance, Mike (Julia's Husband) and I were digging through this really well curated antique/vintage booth and he handed me this bag of vintage glitter. We all know how much I love the stuff. I bought it right away and tucked it safely in my bag. That glass jar is amazing, right?

See? I didn't get much. I spent less than $100, can you stand it? I think there may be another skein of Mopsy coming my way in the very near future. I effing adore it.

What's your favorite yarn?

Tutorial: Stand Mixer Cozy!

kitchen aid 1

I finally got the KitchenAid stand mixer that I've wanted for Christmas this year.  I've used it to make a few loaves of bread and a cake or two; so while this super fancy appliance is amazing and all, it has A LOT of down time. In that down time, it seems to attract every single speck of dust our tiny condo has to offer. UGH.

The last time I went thrifting, I found an amazing vintage pillowcase and snatched it up because I hoard vintage craft supplies like it's no ones business.

Dave suggested that I make a cozy for the mixer that day when I got home. I washed the pillow case and threw it on top of the mixer; genius, right?

It looked so sad and shabby. I pinned a little here and there over then next few weeks.

Last week, I decided to sit down and figure out how the pillowcase could be turned into a cozy.

This is what happened:

kitchen aid cozy materials

-1 vintage pillowcase
-2 yards of vintage velvet ribbon
-2 yard vintage pompom trim
-thread
-sewing machine
-interfacing (I didn't use it, but I should have)

kitchen aid step 1

Step 1:
Stick your two pointer fingers into the inside corners of the pillow case and press them together; the seams should be in the center of the fabric and you will have two triangles at the closed end of the case.

You can iron now, if you're super fancy (I just hand pressed it).

kitchen aid step 2

Step 2:
Measure 4' from the tip of the triangle and mark it somehow. You could use pins or chalk, whatever. I had painter's tape on my work table, so that's what I used.

Separate the newly formed triangles, and stitch across each of them at the 4" mark. This will give the top a little structure.

kitchen aid step 3

Step 3:
On the inside of each of the triangles (where they face each other), Make another mark at 2" from the tip and pin in a 18" piece of ribbon.

kitchen aid step 4

Step 4:
Stitch around the edges of each triangle to secure the ribbon.
(Do a better job then I did; I can be a sloppy sewer.)

kitchen aid step 5

Step 5:
Fold and press a 7" cuff at the bottom (opening) of the pillowcase.
If you are using interfacing this is where you would iron it on.

kitchen aid step 6

Step 6:
Pin trim to the top of the cuff.
Secure the cuff and trim using a zigzag stitch.

kitchen aid step 7

Step 7:
Fold, yet another, 1" hem at the bottom (opening) of the case. This will give the cozy a little extra weight and structure.

And that's it!!! Now, your super expensive appliance won't get coated in that wierd sticky kitchen dust! YAY!!!!!

Kitchen aid 2

If you have any questions, when attempting this you can contact me and I'll walk you through what I did!!!
If you make a cozy, leave a link in the comments! I'd love to see it!!!

A Month of Craft Photos 2: Days 9-12.

My creation

Day 9:
Our Somali kitten, Pumpkin, is sort of my figurative shadow. She follows me around the house constantly; I'm always so afraid I'm going to trip over her and hurt one of us. Don't worry, I still adore her!

Day 10:
A little a bit ago, I recieved a giant box from long-time reader and one of my best bloggy friends; Shannah of Obsidian Kitten. It was full of vintage trim and a ton of macrame cord! I can't wait to use it and make her proud :-)

Day 11:
On Tuesdays, I usually pick up some fresh flowers for my yarn wrapped vase. Not only did I forget today, but I've also forgotten to change the water for quite a few days. Those poor gerber daisies are barely hanging on.

Day 12:
When I think of home, I immediately think of our bed. It's sooooo cozy! That quilt was handmade by a amish collective; Love it sooooo much!

Can you tell that I really love the color yellow???

Pottery Epiphanies

Untitled

Today was such a strange day. One of those days where the sky is the wrong color blue and the clouds are are an unnerving shade of grey; they have a sort of surreal 3D quality that makes you want to pull the covers back over your so you can try again.

I listened to creepy psychedelic music and laid in bed until I had to pull myself together (barely) to meet some people at school.

I had to take the bus today, because Dave had class; it's no big deal, I do it a lot. By the time I got to the school Dave called and told me that he had stopped at home and locked his keys inside. A really nice girl drove me home, and back  to school; the crisis was averted. She told me a really funny story about an awful date she had recently and we laughed loads.

I got back to school and the group I was working with disbanded, except for one guy who had somehow cut his hand really badly in the time that I was gone. He was bleeding a lot, so we decided to call it a day.

Not wanting to waste my time on campus, I decided to go work on a few things in the ceramics studio. I walked in and saw the regulars; familiar faces that made me feel comfortable/safe/whatever but, today (in following the surreal precedent that had already been set) there was a new face.

Sitting in the back on the left, there was a small bearded man with big red glasses. In my mind, I played the hipster or homeless game, trying to figure out what his "deal" was. Nobody seemed to be talking to him, and he definitely looked like he was struggling with the pottery wheel (just like me!).

I got my tools together, prepped my clay and found a seat next to the mystery man. After both us watched each other fail several times at producing a simple cylinder, there was a sort of cosmic connection; circumstance had put us into the same situation and without words we bonded.

That's when I noticed he was wearing two different shoes.

Again, the day was already weird. Why wouldn't he be wearing two different shoes?

I figured that I should just go with the flow. The girls had been giggling about him, The other guy just kept smiling and looking up. I really had no idea what going on. The clay dust was making giant clouds, everything was hazy and covered in mud, and I'm pretty sure my decaf latte had actually been caffeinated; I threw caution to the wind.

I introduced myself to the bearded man in the mismatched shoes.

He immediately perked up and started talking so quickly (and so much) that I couldn't keep up; just non-sequitur references to comics books and TV shows, cartoons he liked, actors he thought were cool. By now, the others were in an uproar; giggling and leaning on each other for support. It didn't help that he had a sort of funny voice.

However, I was legitimately interested in what he had to say, and he had seemed so thrilled that I was listening that he talked until he had left for the day.

Upon his departure, comments were made about his unorthodox social skills and his attire, and I couldn't help but feel like a piece of me left with him.

The conversation after he had left the room, had left me feeling drained/depressed.

I get it, he was weird. Whatever.

While he was in the room it had vibrated with positive energy (at least for me, personally) and after he had left it felt like heavy weights were placed on my shoulders, and all that I wanted to do was lay on the floor in the fetal position.

It's really strange how just the smallest amount of negative energy can completely drain you within seconds.

I've been home now for about two hours and I'm just starting to shake that clay dust out my hair.

How do you combat negative energy?

crafternoon.

crafternoon
(still no photoshop!)

My niece, Vanessa, has been begging to come over and I finally found a pocket of time to hang out with her today. We both really like glitter and glue.

DSCF6586

I was rushing through A.C. Moore looking for a cheap, fun craft and this is what I came up with.
We ripped sheets of tissue paper into little pieces and glued them to ball jars and then sealed it with glitter mod podge. THE MOST FUN!

I kept calling them "candle holders", but you can put whatever you want in the jar, really.
While everything was drying, we made pumpkin bread with cream cheese filling (from a box, I have no business baking).

I had my first crafts class today! (More on that whole ordeal later, I may have to vent). We are making punch rugs as our first project. I'm going to do a Charley Harper inspired owl, I think. We'll what happens. Poppies would be cool, too. I don't know.

It's been an incredibly long day, and the melatonin is starting to do it's job.
Good night, don't let the bed bugs bite.

Tutorial: Recycled Bottle Vase.

tissue paper peonies

Since the last tutorial went so well, I thought I'd share another super easy craft.
After I made all of those tissue paper flowers, I realized I had nothing to put them in. I mean I have big vases and dainty little ones, but nothing that suited them. I really wanted to be able to keep them in the studio, but I need a vessel.

I was sitting in class when inspiration struck, drinking a bottled Frappucino because the cafeteria was out of coffee (there was no way I was going back without caffeine!). I love the look of antique milk bottles, but don't have any. The bottle was the perfect shape, but kind of boring.

This was my solution:

vase tutorial 1

Tools:
-A glass bottle or jar
-Painter's tape (or whatever)
-A paint brush
-A marker (don't use a sharpie!)
-Measuring tape
-Paint
-A tiny giraffe (to play with while the paint dries)

vase tutorial 2

1. Measure the bottle from the bottom up and mark it in a few spots. Don't use a permanent marker (you'll have to scrub the bottle with clorox clean-up to get it off, and in the process you'll ruin your sweet blue button down that fits really well). I measured 2.5 inches, but you can do whatever.

vase tutorial 3

2. Place tape around the bottle, using the marks as a guide. Stare at the giraffe.

vase tutorial 4

3. Paint the bottle up to the tape. I used milk paint because that was what I had, but I guess you could use something else? Seal the paint with Mod Podge (why does that stuff get "chunky" after a little while?). Talk to the giraffe about your feelings while the paint dries.

Vase Tutorial 5

5. Peel off the tape. Immediately show your significant other what you have done. Point out the flaws, and make him fix them (scrape off the sloppy bits, where you went over the tap,e with a razor blade). Stare at the giraffe.

And that's it!!!
Toss a handful of stuff from your pockets (change, marbles, buttons and lint) into your new vase. Arrange the tissue paper flowers you've already made carefully, like a those "floral artists" on Martha. Say something that makes you sound professional.

"The vibrant hues of the peonies are complimented by the neutral vessel. This will create a 'pop of color' when placed in groups, down the center of a dining table. Your guests will marvel at the kinder-crafts which you've created and this will, in turn, distract them from the fact that you are serving Ellio's frozen pizza as an entree."

Have Fun.
Make Stuff.
