B is for Books.

B is for Books

I've always been sort of book-ish. As a kid, we didn't have a lot of money. We didn't go many fancy places. My escape was the library. It was free, and I could check out a "ticket" to where ever I wanted to go. During vacations, while other kids were visiting Mickey Mouse or some exotic island, I was 20,000 leagues under the sea. I didn't appreciate it when I was younger, jealous of the other kids exciting stories. Now, as a grown-up, I love the person being bookish has helped me become.

I'll read pretty much anything (as long as it's not written by Dan Brown or Gregory Maguire); fiction, non-fiction, cookbooks, zines, et al. I have tons of favorite books! My knitting and cookbook collections are insane. I'm not ashamed to admit I've read all of the Harry Potter series, and loved every second of it. Sometimes, I'll continue reading a horrible book, just because I have to finish it.

So, in conclusion, B is for Books.

I've been that way too, for the same reasons. I know you're way younger than me, but when I was a kid, I lived in ML, one block in from the WaWa (then it was an A & P) in ML-(3rd and Hanthorn). Anyway, I would walk to the library, which at the time was next to the park in downtown at the corner of Main and 50 (the old courthouse building). Back then, the library was musty, had old linoleum floors and the only chairs were those round stools you had to stand on to get books-I would roll one in a corner, between the stacks, and read for hours-Encyclopedia Brown's were a big fav. (see how old I am????).

BTW, any plans for going to Woolbearers soon?

I used to be bookish but now the yarn gets in the way. Sometimes I feel guilty like maybe I'm just using the yarn as an excuse? I start books at times, really good books and they end up going half-unread. Unless they're knitting books, somehow I find a way to make it through those...

Some of my fondest childhood memories are about or feature books/bookshop. There is nothing better than wandering round a book shop and going home with a brand new book - the exctitment and anticipation of what the future holds is so special. I remember when I was bought Charlie & the Chocolate Factory and was so excited about getting home and being able to start reading.

I used to read so much in my childhood. I used to be the top reader in all the library contests and such.

I always read so much, too! Even in high school and beyond, I'd escape a party by picking up something (anything!) to read.

And also, while I adored Wicked, I hate the position Gregory Maguire's editors put him in, and I hate him even more for succumbing to them. By Lost his disdain for his own writing was palpable.

I practically grew up in the library. We'd go several times a week -- one of the two libraries near our house was open till 9pm. We'd could go after dinner and stay till closing! I'd still rather read than do practically anything else, if I've got a good book.

Hey, with your love of books and knitting, you might enjoy becoming a volunteer at http://librivox.org/ . We make free, public-domain audiobooks, and a great many of us are knitters, too :) (No Dan Brown at librivox either -- he's still under copyright, thank goodness ;-)

Yay! You're back and blogging. I love books too. Hmmm...who wouldn't I read? Ann Coulter. yes, definitely see myself skipping her.

Great still-life! Robbie~

One of my favorite book of all the time is "Achemist" by Paulo Coelho
Check out this book. it's Lush, evocative, and deeply humane, the story of Santiago(main character) is an eternal testament to the transforming power of our dreams and the importance of listening of our hearts.
Hope check out this book!

Great song!

Me, too - and records. During the summer the library would have a card that they would stamp for each time I checked out items - Oh! to fill up that card! Such joy!

I LOVE Belle & Sebastian!!! When I was younger I read SO MANY BOOKS! I wish I could keep up the same thing now. I go through reading spurts, but it's been a while since my last one. I read all of Augusten Burroughs books in a week last year!

B IS for books today! I was searching for a new book to buy today but realized I shouldn't because I need to study.

That song is great. I used to be bookish when I was kid and somewhere it kinda faded. Maybe that's the reason why I enjoy reading children's books than anything else. I feel bad that I have books on my shelf that I have yet to get to. If only I can read and knit at the same time. I'm sure that if I tried I would end up with really bad results.

I just want to say I really appreciate your Gregory Maguire hate-on. I read one of his books a while back and was really disappointed (I finished it of course, because once you start, no matter how bad, you must go to the end. Or else it will torture you). Unfortunately, friends had spotted me with this book and so for my birthday a couple of weeks later I received another of his books. And again, I hated it. But the thing is that despite how strongly I feel about these books, my friend works at a bookstore and tells me about how people come in and swear by him all day and I really cannot figure it out. Maybe I am wrong? (no that is impossible, don't even go there... )but really, what is it people? Blarg! So thank you for the validation!
Cheers,
Leah

ps. first time reader but I really like your blog. Self declaration of awesome warranted.

I love to read too. I have read all the Harry Potter Series. I love the books I don't care how many people laughed at me about reading the books. I really hate that the series has come to an end. I like cookbooks too.
