Get Healthy!: Week 2 Wrap Up

picnikfile_HrhIwJ

This week, we really dropped the ball. The 28 day challenge began to hamper our already sad little social life, as it became insanely difficult to have lunch dates with friends or each other. On Friday, we threw caution to the wind and joined some friends for dinner at a burger joint and it just went downhill from there.

We ate a little fast food here and there, and I succumbed to the siren song of a super dark bar of chocolate. I was so upset, but also so satisfied.

I began to think about whether the cleanse was right for us. I almost threw in the towel. There were a few times where I bit my tongue about the wrong food decisions we were making.

Throughout the week, I started feeling really strong anxiety at meal time. Was the food I was eating okay? Would I just drop dead if I ate a croissant?

It really didn't seem worth it.

However, we discussed our weekend binge on Monday and evaluated the challenge while still considering our lifestyle. We came to the conclusion that AT HOME we would stick to our planned meals (from the magazine) but if we were out that we wouldn't be the obnoxious friend with tons of self-imposed dietary restrictions.

Luckily, this week's recipes were much more exciting and we've enjoyed eating them. The Lentil Soup and Baked Sweet Potatoes above were spot on! Really great!

It sounds like I'm just making excuses for our lapse of judgement and our lack of willpower, but honestly we just needed to approach this plan more realistically.

So far we've learned about making the right choices, how certain foods make us feel, and their functions in our diet. Who knew that apples make you poop or that parsley was an antioxidant treasure trove? Not me!

Hey, at least it was DARK chocolate!

And here's something that will make you feel better: Tonight I met a friend to start some fitness activities together. We did almost an hour of stretching, treadmill, and elliptical. Then I went home and ate my leftovers from last night's dinner out: STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE! That was my dinner. Tomorrow's a new day.

Robbie, changing your life so wholly is down right hard and I commend you for giving it a go. I'm on year four of trying to transition to vegan and I'm pretty sure it's going to stick this time. (low soy, whole grain, semi-sugar free and no caffeine too!!!) It's A LOT of work. Challenging myself to not pay to eat out has helped a lot. And we're eating good food at home so not to be bored (and crave sushi from a restaurant). YOU CAN DO IT. just get back on the horse and ride my friend, ride!

Anyways I agree with u, u can stick to the plan at home and when u r out for dinner don't be too much restrictive. But don't go on the opposite direction too, u cans till be healthy =)

Mmm, apples. I have to say that after eating 2-3 apples a day almost everyday throughout autumn (we live near-ish an orchard in southeast pa) I feel pretty blah this winter since not having any. Pears seem to have good fiber content too though. I'll b stocking up on them. And good for you for recognizing that each eating plan has its limitations and making it work instead of totally dumping it :D

I love that you're not giving up and you're finding a way that fits you both! It's hard getting rid of all of that delicious crappy food. I'm currently trying a sort of diet with Walter and it's going okay. We go to the gym a lot and it's been great, hopefully we can keep both of our goals. I know you can!

Good for you for getting back on the wagon! And, really, we all slip up sometimes, right? ;)

i tried being wheat free for a while, but a wheat free vegan (i called it wegan) can not find a dinner out for love nor money... so i gave up on that one.

anyway, you're both still doing good!xx

we failed last week too. it started with us going to a party and ending up at a midnight restaurant eating cheese bread floating in tomato soup. it is so hard to go out and eat on the plan! i have been doing breakfast and lunch on the plan, and then making dinner that would be plan approved. bah. i'm so disappointed that we didn't make it the whole 28 days!

You will be more likely to stick to a plan long-term if you come to terms with the fact that you will cheat once in a while. As long as you have more "on-plan" days than "cheat" days, you're still making progress! Kudos to you for making the effort to clean up your diet!
