Resolution #3: Dress Better!

DSCF5343-1

So here's the thing: I don't feel like I necessarily dress badly, but in a lot of situations I still feel like it's not good enough. I mean, I regularly wear actual shoes and button down shirts or whatever but it's sort of become a "uniform" for me. I don't feel particularly special or creative in my current wardrobe. It's definitely not fun. There are days where I feel frumpy or out of touch, just because my shirt fits too big or my pants are too long.

I buy things on impulse, or things that are on sale (just because they're on sale); without thought really. I'm not good at waiting for the perfect thing. I end up settling for something because I want to have "something" right away; fully knowing that whatever I bought isn't perfect for me. The fit is weird, or the color is wrong and I just suck it up. I'll wear the awkward piece here and there to justify the purchase, but eventually it ends up in the part of the closet that I never look in (all the way up in the front).

I don't know where my sartorial discomfort stems from. I have good clothes. I have things people would love to own. Still, I toss on the same western button down and jeans day after day. I feel comfortable in these clothes but I also feel like I could be doing so much more.

I stopped doing "What I Wore" posts because after taking pictures of the new "outfits" I'd come up with, I thought who cares if I'm wearing jeans and a tee shirt. I don't, why should anyone else?

I look at blogger's like Colby and Raphael, and I feel like crap about my mundane wardrobe. Don't get me wrong, I'm not writing this to get pity. It's more just me being honest to myself (and to you) about why I feel so stressed about getting dressed. Hopefully, it will force me to evaluate my purchases more thoroughly and also inspire me to purge the things that I don't love.

It's going to be a tough resolution to follow through with, but sharing things on this blog always makes me feel more dedicated to the action. Your support means a lot!

Easy to relate to this. A few items can be altered to fit better but colors no -__-

I love pictures and it's nice to see just jeans + a tee!

Clothes are so hard! I have such empathy here. I'm a total suburban mom (though not suburban by choice) with a really cool hip sister - no matter which side I'm on, there is something off. At the preschool/kindergarten scene people look sideways at the white nail polish and sparkly gray eyeshadow - but when I hit the venues for a show with Sarah I feel like I'm an extra from the movie Fargo. Keep doing the photos - maybe it will help you evolve your look - and will be an encouragement to the rest of us as well!

And have you ever checked out My Nerd Boyfriend? Great clothes inspiration there!

you guys should go through your closet together and try on every single thing in there. travis and i did that and we threw away two bags full of stuff! if it looks weird or you don't like it, chuck it!
i know what you mean, last summer i went through a cute dress and sweater phase and it made me feel so awesome. then i reverted back to jeans and striped shirts cuz it is easy and it makes me feel frumpy and boring. you can do it robbie!

My favorite things to wear are jeans and a tshirt. I know how you feel though, believe me. Right now, I'm also feeling restricted and creatively suffocated by my wardrobe. I feel like my style has evolved past my clothes, and I need a whole new closet! I'm trying to get creative though, hence my last What To Wear post.

Ugh I feel the same way (especially about not waiting to get the perfect item), hence not doing any What I Wore posts on my blog yet...one day though, one day...

I am a bandit for buying stuff in sale because I talk myself into what an amazing amount of money I would have saved, sometimes without thinking through whether it is something I would wear regularly.
Now, my new rule has been that I cannot buy anything unless I feel passionately about it, and it is a dress/shirt/whatever that will change my life. It also makes me love what I buy more, as the item has had to prove itself to me before being purchased. I know this sounds strange.
Good luck with your clothes adventure- sounds like it will be fun, cant wait to see the results!!

Oh god, I completely agree. I don't have a good style, it's really plain. I'd love to branch out but I'm short and I wear such odd sizes that I could never find something that fits me well. We'll find out style and work it all out, though! :)
I like your style from what I've seen!

This is my problem as well. We're moving in a couple of months and to budget better I'm gonna be keeping money in envelopes and if money for clothes doesn't get used it will stay there so when I find the perfect X,Y, or Z I will be able to make an investment in something good, not just another bland shirt or ill-fitted jeans.

You have touched on some reasons for the decline of outfit posts on my blog. :) But in all honesty, I like seeing "accessible" outfits because I know I can "copy" them. Everyone can't do/afford high fashion or something. :) With that said, that outfit photo you posted is all kinds of creative. :)

Haha on lazy days I also simply wear jeans and a shirt. A while ago I set myself a creative challenge to dress the way i wanted to feel, but that was just for a week. I do feel like I'm getting better at it though :)

i struggle with worries about my boring wardrobe tendencies, but i still try to post the boring outfits, if only to be honest, and also to get myself to wear better outfits.

i like seeing your outfits! ^_^

Oh man! If the way you dress gets you down, definitely rethink it! I do the exact opposite. I only buy things if they're completely perfect, if I've had them in mind, or it's some instance of fate (too many examples to elaborate). Just look at it as a game or a love affair! Or maybe don't, maybe I'm filling gaps with clothes. This comment is becoming deep. My point is just YOU CAN DO IT! You totally deserve to have fun with dressing fun!
