I saw Pip's Granny-a-day meme, and I just knew I had to join. The problem is that I've only crocheted a few times in my life, and I'd never made a granny square before.

I jumped in anyway, and watched her series of how-to videos until I made something that looked sort of like a granny square.

They're getting much better (as you can see), but something is still a little off, right? Are the stitches too loose? Is the hook I'm using too small? Can you even tell?

I feel like granny squares are something I should definitely try to master, as they are of pivotal importance in the style of crafting that I love the most: VINTAGE!!!

Are there any tips or pointers you can give? I'd really love to produce some consistently sized squares one day!

I am a huge granny fan. I recommend only chain one between clusters (ch 2 in corners), it looks like yours are ch2. Day 4 looks pretty good, but if you want a fuller look maybe go down a hook size. I use 5mm or 5.5mm for worsted weight acrylic but I like mine tight... http://butterknifescrewdriver.blogspot.com/2011/08/baby-blanket-for-l-j-s-little-girl.html Here is a blanket I made using 5mm hook and Vanna's Choice yarn by Lionbrand yarn! Good luck. Post more photos as you go :)

The 2nd one is def too loose...for normal worsted weight yarn I usually use an 'H' hook. And you could change the stitches between clusters from 3 to 2...if that makes sense:)Also, it could just be because you dont crochet often; so with more practice you'll be turning out perfectly lovely squares:) I've made lots of these, and am currently making a blanket thats one big square:)

Day 4 is looking good! Like others, I suggest ch 2 or even ch 1 between your clusters. I do a ch 3 in the corners because I like them pointy. I usually make my squares with worsted weight yarn an H or I (5mm or 5.5mm) hook. Good luck!! They're super fun.

Yeah, I agree! it looks like there's an extra chain space in between but it looks like you can get away with that by blocking the piece. The fourth one has a good shape to it!

I think you're going pretty well! Day 4 looks good ^_^ I use a 3.5mm hook when crocheting with 8ply yarn. I think maybe it's just your tension that you need to practice with? I do two chains between clusters as well ^_^ Also, blocking is fantastic for fixing up slightly wobbly edges ~_^

i tried following pips videos (which were great) but my squares were never quite squares(or squareish on 3 corners and a big ol curved edge on the other one)... i decided to just work on some simple things instead to practice - like a blanket made out of just chain and single or possibly double stitch (who knows??) and am going to make my aunty help me with the rest. i am impressed mr robbie!x oh and love the colours you've chosen..x

Oh yes! Practice makes perfect. I agree with Anne, maybe less chain stitches between clusters. We can practice on Tuesday!

Your clusters look good but it looks like too many stitches between clusters. I chain one between clusters and three at the corners using a J hook on worsted yarn, as recommended by Strumpets Becky. Your tension will get better the more you do. Hooray for learning something new!
