MUSIC MONDAY: DIY RECORD WALL

I know I've touched on the subject, but for those of you that didn't know; I've moved into a new place! It's so full of exciting new opportunity and positive energy. Some days, I wake up and I feel like my heart is just going to explode from symptoms of extreme jubilation. Of course there are other factors that have been making things incredibly blissful, but right now we're talking about the physical space.

I've moved into a much smaller room and have been working hard to find creative and visually appealing space saving solutions while buying as little furniture as possible. It's been tricky, but I love the way things are shaping up.

One of my first DIYs in my new bedroom is this fantastic record wall, I have a growing collection and my record console can only hold so many.

This DIY really is as simple as sticking a binder clip on either side of the record, and hanging it on two clear pushpins. Of course you get get really fussy and measure everything out, probably do some tricks with a level and string or something, but I just lined everything up with the baseboards and the corner of the wall and filled in the negative space. I don't like over thinking projects or waiting too long to see my vision come to fruition.

You really don't need to buy those fancy record frames to show off your collection. You can just go to the office supply store and buy a few bags of binder clips.

I just saved you $100. You can Paypal me the difference.

HANDMADE GIFT PARADE: SHARPIE MUGS + DAVID'S TEA.

last minute gifts making mugs 1 making mugs 2

Every year, I work really hard to make sure that my co-workers receive meaningful handmade gifts. I spend as much time with them (if not more) as I do with Dave, so it's really important for me to make sure that I make the most unique gifts possible.

I made these mugs using the tutorial on A Beautiful Mess for my boss and his soon to be wife, Paula. I wanted them to be neutral enough to fit in with any theme or decor they have going on while still encompassing that crafty handmade vibe.

After wrapping them up, I tossed some Sleigh Ride tea from David's in the box for a complete gift set. (I also gave them the craziest vintage bubble bulb lamp. I should have taken a picture before I packed it up.)

Finally settling in to make gifts always puts me into the hoilday spirit! I hope they liked them!

Christmas Knitting Swap!!!!

Christmas knitting party donutsssss DSC_0152

On Sunday, our Tuesday night knitting group met up to finalize our Christmas in July swap! We basically ananonymously traded yarn, and then patterns and finally a finished projects. It was super clever and the most fun!

Our lovely host, Lea, made some incredible treats for us to eat while we sat and chatted before the big exchange. It was great to finally catch up with everyone after a soul crushing semester at a new school. I was so excited to see everyone!

Can you even stand how stinkin cute how cute Lea's house is? It looks like a yarn shop! Julia is pretty adorable too! Eventually, we got around to swapping gifts! Shawls for everyone!

My creation

There was even a guest appearance from an estranged West Coast knitter whom we all adore and miss!

After sharing our stories and making up for lost time, it was time to pack up our shawls and hit the road!

All in all, it was a great time with great friends that I'm so thankful to have in my life! You're all the greatest!

MUSEUM OF AWKWARD KNITS; a retrospective.

Header bad knitd

Dave is going to take some things to aunt's yard sale tomorrow, so I was digging through my studio/hoarding room and I came across some of my very first (very ugly) knits. Earlier in the week, I was reading a post at Untangling Knots about blog envy and it inspired me to show off some of most awkward FOs. There was a short piece about only seeing what the blogger wants to show you, and how for every good project there's probably a hidden basket of dreadful ones.

Giant Scarf

This scarf was the VERY FIRST thing I ever knitted. I bought the "Stitch N' Bitch" book by Debbie Stoller, and rushed to JoAnn's immediately to buy supplies. I really thought variegated yarn was the coolest thing ever, and the Jiffy Thick and Quick had me wrapping up my first project in a day or two. Unfortunately, I didn't know when to stop. this scarf is around 8 inches wide and 10 feet long. Obviously, I have never worn it anywhere and it's been sitting in the same basket for 8 years.

Excited by new hobby, I wanted everyone to have a hand-knit scarf right away! I went back to JoAnn's and picked up a skein of Homespun. For quite a while I had a disgusting love affair with this stuff. It was nubbly enough to hide mistakes and still thick enough to finish projects quickly. After knitting 2 1/2 - 3 feet in garter stitch, I was kind of over the whole scarf thing. I gave up and made four really awful tassels to class the thing up (or so I thought). I knew it was bad, but I tried to give it to Dave anyway. In a sort of Tim-Gunn-esque fashion, he said something about questioning my taste level. We both giggled and this scarf found a cozy place next to the other one in the basket of doom.

Shortly after moving through all of the small projects in Debbie's book, I thought I was ready to take on a sweater. I didn't really understand gauge and I had no idea what my measurements were but I sat on the floor in my new craft room for three days and knitted my little heart out. With two balls of Red Heart Super Saver and size 10.5 needles, I was going to make a sweater. I was so excited to finally have something more than a hat to wear. I didn't think anything of it when carefully mattress stitching the seams closed. The sleeves seemed perfect. I finally "blocked" it (I had no idea that you couldn't block acrylic), waited anxiously for it to dry and finally tried it on. OH MY GOD! What a mess! I have given this sweater away three times. I swear. For some reason, it was in the basket, too.

bobby bear

Finally, I figured out that I should be using better yarn and paying attention to all of the pattern's logistics. I decided that I was good enough to knit a gift for a friend who was having a baby. I ordered some Lamb's Pride online (that's what they used throughout the book, it had to be good) and picked out a pattern for a little teddy bear. Let me tell you, when it was all finished I was so proud! I had learned so much new stuff and finally got some "fancy" yarn; I was on my way. Eventually, someone pointed out the the wool was insanely itchy and that it would probably rip a baby's face off; so this went into the basket too. Even though this project was doomed, I did find one of my favorite yarns ever (for things that don't go against skin). Lamb's Pride has such good colors and the little bit of mohair makes it so magical looking.

And there you have it; some of my worst projects ever! I think I may send them all to the yard sale and if no one buys them, they're off to Goodwill. I have pictures and now, this post, to remember them by. I even uploaded a few pictures to Ravelry to finally take pride in my previously faceless UGH! projects.

So, how do we feel about this little dose of reality? Wanna share one of your worst projects in the comments?

craft supply challenge: week 1.

I'm so excited to Craftyminx's "Craft Supply Challenge" this week!

I had actually planned to show you all how to make colored "seaglass" with Mod Podge and food coloring but after three efforts, a giant mess and half a bottle of Mod Podge, I gave up. It just didn't work.

DSC_1089

This is my much more humble submission. I coated a jar in Mod Podge and wrapped yarn around it. Haha. So much simpler!

I hope I win something :-)

I have absolutely no idea what those flowers are. I bought them at the grocery and they stink horribly. I'm really no good with plants in general. I definitely have a black thumb. ugh.

However, if you would like to know more about bringing plants inside AND keeping them alive, check out Colby's post on natural greenery. He'd be proud to know that I did use a little preservative and cold water! (We'll see how it goes!)

What have you been working on this week?

This rug is the reason I took a day off from blogging. It was due on Wednesday morning. I worked on it all day Tuesday. I even took to Lea's house (where our knitting group meets) because I had to get it done.

Inspiration:

Materials:

♥For Rug-Burlap, 4 Skeins of Vanna's Choice Yarn.
♥Frame- 2 18" Canvas Stretchers, 2 24" Canvas Stretchers, Martha Stewart Fine Glitter in Fire Opal, Matte Mod Podge.

Time:

♥Over 20 hours!

Final Thoughts:

I love the finished project, but never thought it would be as time consuming as it was. I have a new respect for any crafters that attempt punching rugs. My back hurt for days!

I had painted the frame with gold acrylic paint first and I hated it. It just didn't pop. It wasn't metallic enough. I was watching Martha one day; they were coating shoes with glitter and they looked amazing! Inspired, I used the same technique to finish the frame and I adore it. Glitter makes me insanely happy.

I'm so relieved that it's finished. I can focus on my bird mask again. Matter of fact, I'm going to nestle into the couch, watch project runway and cut out crepe paper feathers.

What have you adorable readers been up to?

Vintage Halloween Inspiration: Magazines!

Pack O fun: October 1965.
"Pack-O-Fun: October 1965"

I found a lot of these vintage "Pack-o-Fun" magazines on Etsy recently for a great price! They usually cost about $6-$9 on eBay, and I only paid that much for a lot of 4 of them

They're all so fantastic! There are so many amazing projects I would have never thought of. I have plenty of "modern" and "hip" craft books and while I love them to bits, nothing beats a good vintage magazine. They are little kitsch and maybe really cheesy (and that's probably why I love them); without all of the pretense of the modern craft community. If you want to tape candy to a paper cone, do it!

They have inspired me to be less shy about all aspects my aesthetic.; not everything has to be sleek and streamlined. I like a sort of kooky, folk art style and these seem like the perfect thing to make me feel more comfortable with my personal place is in the crafting community.

That seems incredibly sentimental. I forgot I was talking about the magazine for a second.

I'm hoping to make this witch soon!

Pack O fun: October 1965.
Party Favors!

I guess the reason I'm thinking about this so much is because for the past two days, I've been working on a secret tutorial for a blog that I'm a guest on next Monday. It's decidedly "kinder-craft" looking; googly eyes are involved. I've been wondering all day if it's too cheesy to share. After flipping through these books, I took a few minutes to reflect on the history of crafting and the importance of these kitschy little tomes.

If anything, I'm now severely excited to share the tutorial with the readers of "sparrows and arrows" and I'm almost positive that their readers will love it as much as I do.

The best costume ideas!

I'll post a reminder when it's time to go check things out! It really is the cutest Halloween decoration in my house!

Can you believe it? I actually finished something!

Materials: Cheap felt and a piece of scrap yarn.
Time: 2 hours? maybe? I made while I watched TV.

Isn't it cute? I have to figure out how to take a decent picture in the house so I can show you what it looks like hanging in my living room. Until then, enjoy these ones :-)

WIP: an autumnal garland.

WIP: an autumnal garland

I know, I'm certifiable, right?
I should just finish something.

Here's the thing: I love to have something small and easy to work on while I watch t.v. at night.
I'm bored with pumpkins. I needed a break and I have a really good garland spot picked out.

So, yeah.

I'm making another thing.

punching a rug.

rug punch sampler

This is my punch rug sampler for my Crafts class. I ripped a Missoni print, because Target let me down and I have zigzag fever!!!

The loops had to be 3 different lengths, thus the shaggy sections. If I had had my choice, I would have made it all short or long loops, without the awkward medium sections.

Most other people made little pictures, but I'm happy with my "abstract" rug.

This sampler was just practice for a larger, Charley Harper inspired rug that I'll be working on next. I'm really excited to get moving on a new project :-)

crafternoon.

crafternoon
(still no photoshop!)

My niece, Vanessa, has been begging to come over and I finally found a pocket of time to hang out with her today. We both really like glitter and glue.

DSCF6586

I was rushing through A.C. Moore looking for a cheap, fun craft and this is what I came up with.
We ripped sheets of tissue paper into little pieces and glued them to ball jars and then sealed it with glitter mod podge. THE MOST FUN!

I kept calling them "candle holders", but you can put whatever you want in the jar, really.
While everything was drying, we made pumpkin bread with cream cheese filling (from a box, I have no business baking).

I had my first crafts class today! (More on that whole ordeal later, I may have to vent). We are making punch rugs as our first project. I'm going to do a Charley Harper inspired owl, I think. We'll what happens. Poppies would be cool, too. I don't know.

It's been an incredibly long day, and the melatonin is starting to do it's job.
Good night, don't let the bed bugs bite.
